Papers of the North American Land Company [manuscript], 1707-1843, n.d.

The papers contain correspondence, articles of agreement, deeds and indentures, surveyor's reports and plats, land grants, transcribed legal documents, and financial accounts pertaining to holdings in Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington City, Virginia, and Georgia. Company organizers James Greenleaf, John Nicholson and Robert Morris are the principal correspondents. Many of the letters were written by Greenleaf in his efforts to straighten out affairs of the company when it was put in receivership. The collection includes several manuscript maps of tracts of land including one for a complete block in Washington. Correspondents, including suceeding trustees in receivership, include John Ashley, John Breckinridge, George French, Robert James, John Nixon, Robert Orr, Henry Pratt, and Benjamin Tilman.

James Greenleaf (1765-1843) was born in Boston, Mass., and died in Washington, D.C. In 1793, he was appointed Consul for the U.S. at Amsterdam, where he amassed a large fortune.
